How to Cite an Interview in MLA 9.

MLA 9 treats the person being interviewed as the author. Format depends on whether the interview is personal (conducted by you), published (in a newspaper or magazine), or recorded (on video or podcast).

Last, First. Personal interview. Day Month Year.

Example:

Morrison, Toni. Personal interview. 4 Mar. 2010.


Published interview (magazine or newspaper)

Interviewee Last, First. “Interview Title.” Interview by First Last, Publication Name, Day Month Year, pp. #–#.

Example:

Obama, Barack. “A Conversation with the President.” Interview by David Remnick, The New Yorker, 27 Jan. 2014, pp. 45–55.


Video interview (YouTube, broadcast)

Interviewee Last, First. “Interview Title or Description.” Interview by First Last, Platform or Show, Day Month Year, URL.


Key rules

  • The interviewee is the author
  • Specify the interview type: “Personal interview”, “Telephone interview”, “Email interview”
  • For published interviews, the interviewer is credited with “Interview by”
  • For personal interviews, no URL is needed — just the date
