How to Cite a Newspaper in MLA 9.

Newspaper citations in MLA 9 follow the same Core Elements framework as journal articles but with a few key differences — no volume/issue number, and the date is given in Day Month Year format.

Last, First. “Article Title.” Newspaper Name, Day Month Year, p. or pp. #.

Example:

Friedman, Thomas L. “Connecting the Dots.” The New York Times, 15 Jan. 2024, p. A1.


Online newspaper article

Last, First. “Article Title.” Newspaper Name, Day Month Year, URL.

Example:

Carrington, Damian. “Climate Crisis: Scientists Spot Warning Signs.” The Guardian, 22 Mar. 2023, www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/mar/22/climate-crisis.


Key formatting rules

  • The newspaper name is italicised
  • Article title in quotation marks
  • Date format: Day Month Year (e.g., 15 Jan. 2024)
  • Include the section/page if available (“p. A1” or “pp. B4–5”)
  • For online articles, include the URL instead of a page number

If no author is given, use a shortened form of the article title in quotation marks: (“Climate Crisis”).
